Criminal Justice Area of Concentration within Social Sciences A.A.
The Criminal Justice concentration in the A.A. in Social Sciences introduces core principles of the field, including system operations and the psychological and sociological factors behind behavior. Students study the three components of the justice system, constitutional rights and Supreme Court decisions, and the Maryland court system, while gaining real-world insight from guest professionals such as police officers, judges, lawyers, and correctional staff.

The Criminal Justice Area of Concentration within Social Sciences A.A. introduces students to the highly specialized and sophisticated area of criminal justice by acquainting students with the principles underlying technical skills and procedures, administration and operation of criminal justice organizations and psychological and sociological origins of human behavior.
Success in the program is defined by your ability to apply what you’ve learned in real-world scenarios. This program ensures that every student achieves the following core competencies:
- Explain the 3 major components of the criminal justice system.
- Describe common methods of gathering crime data.
- Analyze aspects of the United States Constitution and Supreme Court decisions for their effects on individual rights and law enforcement practices.
- Outline the history of the criminal justice system in the United States.
- Describe the structure and operations of the Maryland court system.
